Why I Chose South Africa – And Why I’d Do It All Over AgainEvery day, someone asks me, “Why South Africa? Why leave the UK?” Often, they think we’re mad! My answer is always simple: the people, the lifestyle, and the people again!
There’s something extraordinary about the resilience of South Africans – the way communities stick together against adversity. It’s inspiring to witness how people here unite, support one another, and cultivate hope even in challenging times. The spirit of ubuntu (togetherness) is alive and well, and it’s one of the many reasons we fell in love with this country.
Born and raised in Britain, I spent years holidaying in South Africa visiting my parents. In 2014, my husband and I sat down with our three grown-up children and asked them what they thought about making the move. Their response? “Let’s do it!” So, in 2015, we packed up everything, even the dog and arrived here, ready to start a new chapter.
South Africa has given us so much more than we could have imagined. We’ve embraced the outdoor lifestyle; walking, exercising, enjoying incredible wine and built fulfilling careers. I’m proud to work with an amazing real estate team helping others find their dream homes, while my husband runs his own plumbing business. Our children are thriving too: one is travelling the world working on yachts; another owns two apartments in Cape Town; and our daughter has been signed by a South African record label – an opportunity that might not have come her way as quickly as this back in the UK.
Of course, there have been challenges – some really tough days – but they are far outweighed by the sunny, blue sky, spectacular ones. We’ve embraced local culture: we say “supper,” not tea or dinner, call traffic lights “robots,” host braais (not BBQs), we sit in the shade instead of laying on the sunbeds burning to a crisp , go for a quick weekend away without leaving the country and proudly wear SA cricket kits at matches we can actually afford to attend!
Moving here was a leap of faith, but it’s one we’ll never regret. South Africa isn’t just where we live; it’s where we belong and I am proud to be a part of the tapestry that makes it what it is!
If you’ve ever dreamed of making a bold change – whether it’s moving countries or pursuing a new career – take that step. Life’s too short to wonder “what if.” And if you’re considering making South Africa your home, let’s chat. I’d love to help you find your perfect place under this beautiful sun.
