Mental Health in real estate! The emotional rollercoaster

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Real Estate: When the Deal Knocks the Stuffing Out of You

In the high-stakes world of real estate, we often talk about market trends, closing strategies, and the thrill of the next big deal. But underneath the polished veneer of success and the relentless pursuit of commission, there is a much less discussed, yet deeply impactful, aspect of the industry: mental health.

I have talked about this ever since joining the industry as for real estate professionals, the "ups and downs" aren't just market fluctuations; they are emotional tsunamis that can genuinely knock the stuffing out of you day after day and it can be hard to pick yourself up!  I have been there and seen so much of this in recent years.

The Commission-Only Tightrope Walk:

So let's start with the elephant in the room: commission-only work. While you think that it offers the allure of unlimited earning potential, it also carries the immense weight of financial uncertainty. Every "no" isn't just a missed opportunity; it can feel like a direct hit to your livelihood. The pressure to constantly perform, to chase that next listing, to close that deal, can be relentless. This inherent instability can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and even feelings of hopelessness when the deals aren't flowing.

It's Not Just About the Next Deal, It's About People:

We're in a people business, right? And while connecting with clients and building relationships is rewarding, it also means navigating a complex web of human emotions, expectations, and sometimes, outright difficult personalities.

  • Unpredictable Clients: From demanding buyers who change their minds daily to sellers with unrealistic expectations, managing client relationships can be emotionally draining. You invest time, energy, and expertise, only to have a deal fall through due to factors that are entirely out of your control.

  • The Weight of Responsibility: You are often guiding people through one of the biggest financial and emotional decisions of their lives. The pressure to get it right, to be the expert, and to ensure a smooth transaction can be immense.

  • Dealing with Rejection: Rejection is an inherent part of the sales process. But constantly facing it, whether it's a lost listing or a failed offer, can chip away at your self-esteem and motivation.

The Invisible Burden of "Always On":

In what is now a 24/7 world, the real estate industry often demands you to be "always on." Late-night calls, weekend showings, and the constant pressure to respond immediately can blur the lines between work and personal life. Even when you are away and having a well earned break you are still taking calls. This lack of boundaries can lead to burnout, sleep deprivation, and a sense of being perpetually overwhelmed.

When the Bounce-Back Feels Impossible:

Real estate agents are often praised for their resilience, their ability to bounce back from setbacks. But what happens when you have been bounced so many times, you feel like you're permanently deflated?

  • Exhaustion: Both physical and mental exhaustion can make it incredibly difficult to find the energy to pursue new leads or maintain a positive outlook.

  • Self-Doubt: When deals consistently fall through, or you're struggling to gain traction, self-doubt can creep in, making you question your abilities and your place in the industry.

  • Isolation: Despite being surrounded by people, the competitive nature of real estate can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation. It can be hard to open up about struggles when everyone else seems to be thriving.

Prioritizing Your Mental Wealth:

It's time we started talking about "mental wealth" as much as we talk about financial wealth in real estate. Here are some crucial steps to protect your well-being:

  1. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no. Schedule dedicated personal time and stick to it. Your clients will respect your boundaries if you set them clearly from the beginning.

  2. Build a Support System: Connect with other agents, mentors, or even a therapist who understands the unique pressures of the industry. Share your experiences and seek advice. Learn to talk as you may be surprised at how many people in the industry are going through the same things as you. I find listening to podcasts also helps me focus.

  3. Practice Self-Care: This isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. Whether it's exercise, meditation, hobbies, or simply disconnecting, make time for activities that recharge your batteries. I find that walking and being outside is my happy place - you have to find yours!

  4. Celebrate Small Wins: The big deals are great, but acknowledge and celebrate the smaller victories along the way. This helps maintain momentum and a positive mindset. Set small goals, simple steps and learn to tick them off and see the progress you are making.

  5. Seek Professional Help: If you're struggling with persistent stress, anxiety, or depression, please don't hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional. It's a sign of strength, not weakness.

The real estate journey is undoubtedly filled with exhilarating highs. But to truly thrive in this demanding profession, we must acknowledge and address the emotional toll it can take. Prioritising your mental health isn't just about personal well-being; it's about sustainable success and a more fulfilling career in the long run. Don't let the deal knock the stuffing out of you, empower yourself to navigate the emotional rollercoaster with resilience and self-compassion
