So… You’re an “Inkomer” in Paarl? Let’s Talk.If you’ve recently moved to Paarl, chances are someone has (lovingly) referred to you as an "inkomer". (
Translation: You weren’t born here.)And depending on who you ask, your "inkomer" status expires:
- After 100 days
- After 12 years
- Or possibly never 😌
But let’s unpack this properly. Because historically speaking… almost all of us are 'inkomers'.
A Very Quick History Lesson (Don’t Worry, There’s No Test)
The original Paarl area dates back to the late 1600s, when it was divided into a handful of farms during the early Cape settlement period.
If we’re being technically accurate, only descendants of those first few farming families and the local inhabitants could claim “original” status.
Which means… If your surname wasn’t recorded in 1690 next to a vineyard boundary line, you too are technically an "inkomer".
Yes. Even the ones who say they aren’t. 😉 History humbles us all...
The Great Semigration EraFast forward to today, and Paarl is experiencing a beautiful wave of semigration.
Families are moving from larger cities for:
- Better lifestyle
- Strong schools
- Community
- Fresh air
- A slower, more balanced pace of life
And what happens when they arrive? They’re called "inkomers"... Lovingly. Mostly.
So When Do You Get Your “Paarlite Green Card”?
Here’s my unofficial, completely non-legally-binding guide to earning full Paarlite status:
You may now consider yourself a true Paarlite if:
✔ You have an opinion about which school wins Interschools (even if you pretend you don’t).
✔ You have driven past Paarl Rock and thought, “Surely I should hike that again.”
✔ You’ve had a strong view about traffic in Main Road (all six minutes of it - ok maybe it takes a little longer...).
✔ You know at least three people who know each other.
✔ You greet strangers at Woolworths.
✔ You’ve attended a wine event “just quickly” and left three hours later.
✔ You now refer to Cape Town as “the city.”
At this point, I regret to inform you:
You are no longer an "inkomer". You are one of us!
What Really Makes a Paarlite? It’s not about birthplace. It’s about belonging.
Paarl has always evolved. From early farms to established families to modern estates and growing neighbourhoods — every generation added something.
Today’s so-called “inkomers” are:
- Starting businesses
- Supporting local schools
- Investing in property
- Raising families
- Strengthening the local economy
That’s not being an outsider... That’s being part of the story.
Final VerdictIf you’ve chosen Paarl — whether 3 months ago or 30 years ago — and you’ve embraced its schools, its wine farms, its community events, and its way of life…
Congratulations!
Your green card has been approved.
